What exactly are in today’s mineral-based foundations and what are the benefits of continuing the use of minerals? If you have sensitive skin, many of the ingredients in traditional cosmetic creams and powders can cause irritation and breakouts. Fortunately, mineral-based foundations are a viable option for all skin types, including sensitive skin. This includes oily, dry and combination skin. This is mainly due to the fact that mineral makeup is comprised of natural ingredients rather than chemicals that can irritate skin and clog pores.

Calming Properties
Generally speaking, mineral-based foundations are made up of a variety of all natural, finely ground minerals from the earth such as zinc oxide, iron oxides, titanium dioxide and in some cases bismuth oxychloride; without any of the chemicals, dyes and preservatives found in traditional foundations. Because titanium dioxide and zinc oxide have anti-inflammatory properties, mineral makeup products may have a calming effect on the skin. This can be particularly important if you suffer from inflammatory problems such as rosacea or acne. Mineral makeup’s zinc oxide also offers some UVA-UVB protection.

Best of all, the minerals used are available in a wide variety of shades, making it a good choice for many complexions, regardless of ethnicity. Because it is a four-in-one cosmetic (sunscreen, concealer, base, powder) mineral makeup, it can save both time and money.
Buyer Beware!
Some mineral foundations contain bismuth oxycholoride, which is a pearlizing agent. Bismuth is a byproduct of lead and copper processing that can cause itching and rashes for some. It is one of the ingredients you should avoid if you have sensitive skin. If you have dry skin, avoid products that contains silica and/or kaolin, which are oil-absorbing and can dry out the skin. However, if you have oily skin, formulas containing silica and kaolin are ideal.

The best advice is to try several mineral foundation products for yourself and see how each makes you look and feel. Don’t forget to check out ease of use while you are at it! Here are several mineral-based foundations to look for and sample to find out what works best for you:
